According to US media news on November 15, 2017, BYD will build a new electric truck factory in Ontario, Canada. This will be BYD's first factory in Canada.
BYD said that the new factory will be put into operation next year, and will initially employ 40 employees, and then gradually increase the number of employees. At present, BYD has not announced which city it will build a factory in, but only said that it will build commercial vehicles in Ontario, and parts and technologies will be imported from China. But BYD also said that over time, most of its raw materials will come from Canada.
BYD Canada spokesman Ted Dowling said that BYD is a global company, and BYD also hopes to achieve localization, so it will seize the opportunities of incentive programs and policies to create jobs in different markets.
In 2013, BYD established an electric bus factory in Lancaster, California. But Dowling said that as BYD rolls out plans in Canada, the company will invest more in the Canadian market, because Canada has a friendlier business environment than the U.S. when it comes to environmental technology companies.
The Canadian auto industry once flourished, but has slowed in recent years due to competition from Mexico and the United States. Canada is currently trying to revive the auto industry through electrification.
